Awakening - A Poem by Gabrielle Yetter | POETRY PLATFORM

Two people hold hands supporting each other

Awakening by Gabrielle Yetter

She wanted to change the world

Shed tears every night watching the news

Nightmares of dark shadows and desperate lives

Haunting her.

Then she arose the next morning

Walked to the foodbank

Served meals to a young family

Who clasped her hand and said,

You changed our world.

He wanted to bring relief

To tragic souls who’d lost their homes

Cast out from all they held dear

Into a wilderness of desperation.

He believed his role useless

Until that night

When he walked onto the stage

To take his final bow

And looked into the eyes of the audiences

Who wept tears of joy.

She worried she wasn’t helping enough

Wanting to be there

Among refugees forced from their land

When soldiers glared down barrels of guns.

Her heart splintered as helplessly she watched.

Then she came home to her children

Who wrapped her in their arms

And laughed at her jokes

As she was always there.

He wanted to bring peace to the planet

Meditated daily

Lit candles for the suffering

And anguished he could do no more

As he drove to visit his elderly mother

Confined in a care home.

Spent hours listening, talking,

With a parent who whispered in his ear

Son, you brought peace to my world.

She wanted to make a difference

Read about lonely old people living alone

In far flung corners of the country

Then crouched down

Next to a beggar on the street

Who growled

Go away.

She did.

Returned with sandwiches and a smile

And saw a twinkle of hope in his eyes

That said,

She’d made a difference today.

And while the faraway, far apart,

Misplaced and displaced

Sought refuge from the pain.

The singular individuals

Who yearned to do more

Did.

My poetry mostly focuses on the hidden individuals who we walk by or sit next to and never notice. They are mostly about hope. And insights into who these people are.
